The Meaning of Lanikai

Lanikai means "heavenly sea" in Hawaiian, and the half-mile beach sits on O'ahu's windward side just past Kailua. The water inside the protective reef stays remarkably calm and turquoise. The two offshore islets — Moku Nui and Moku Iki, together called the Mokulua — are state seabird sanctuaries, home to wedge-tailed shearwaters and Bulwer's petrels. At sunrise, the sun rises directly between the two Mokes, a view that has anchored generations of windward families.
