The Story Behind Lanikai

Lanikai ("heavenly sea") sits on O'ahu's windward side just past Kailua. The two Mokulua islands offshore — Moku Nui and Moku Iki — are state seabird sanctuaries, home to wedge-tailed shearwaters and Bulwer's petrels. The reef shelters the bay enough that the water inside the line stays calm and clear. From the beach, the rising sun comes up directly between the two Mokes — a sight that has anchored windward O'ahu families for generations.
