The Story Behind the Lehua

The 'ōhi'a tree is a pioneer, often the first thing to grow on new lava — a living link between Pele's fire and the green forest that follows. Its scarlet lehua blossom is sacred, and one old story tells that picking lehua from the tree brings rain, because 'Ōhi'a and Lehua were lovers turned into tree and flower and cannot stand to be parted. This kakau composition translates that flower into pattern: petals of niho mano and enata, the lehua kept in the language of skin. It honors both the bloom and the love story behind it.
