The Story Behind the Leiomano

The leiomano is a traditional Hawaiian weapon — a wooden club edged with shark teeth, carried by warriors and by ali'i, designed for close combat and ceremonial display alike.

The name itself tells the story: lei (garland, encircling) and mano (shark). A row, sometimes two, sometimes a full crescent of niho mano was lashed into a curved or paddle-shaped wooden frame using olonā cordage. Leiomano were the work of skilled craftsmen and were often passed down within ali'i lines. Beyond the battlefield, they appear in hula implements, in koa-carved replicas, and in museum collections that hold the lineage of Hawaiian craft. Their power lay in the same place as their meaning — the mano, ancestor and protector.
