The Meaning of Lono

Each year, Hawaiians once observed Makahiki — a four-month festival sacred to Lono that began with the rising of Makali'i (the Pleiades) and ended in early spring. During Makahiki, war was forbidden across the islands, taxes in the form of hookupu were gathered for the ali'i, and games, hula, and feasting marked the long pause. Lono is the rain that fertilizes the kalo lo'i, the cloud that crowns Haleakalā in winter, the breath of abundance after the work is done.
