Malasada Donut — Hawaiian T-Shirt

Golden, sugar-dusted, and still warm from the fryer — the malasada is Hawai'i's most irresistible guilty pleasure.

The Story Behind Malasada Donut

The malasada — a pillowy, deep-fried Portuguese doughnut with no hole — arrived in Hawai'i with sugar plantation workers from the Azores in the late 1800s, and the islands never looked back. Unlike standard doughnuts, malasadas are fried to a deep golden brown and rolled in sugar while piping hot, creating a crisp-edged, custard-soft pastry that is absolutely addictive. Leonard's Bakery in Honolulu, which has been serving them since 1952, is practically a pilgrimage site for malasada devotees.

Fat Tuesday — known locally as Malasada Day — sends lines snaking around bakeries across Hawai'i as locals stock up before Lent. But the truth is, any day is the right day for a malasada, especially when they're fresh off the fryer. This shirt is for everyone who has burned their fingers on one and had absolutely zero regrets.
