The Story Behind the Hahalua

Hāhālua means "two breaths" in Hawaiian, a name that points to the manta's wing beat and the way it seems to float between worlds — half fish, half flight. Mantas are filter feeders, harmless, drawn to plankton-rich water along the Kona coast where night dives bring them in close. In Polynesian tradition they have been read as gentle aumakua: protectors of the open ocean, signs of grace and balance. This kakau composition fills the manta's wings with niho mano and wave bands, layering quiet strength inside an animal already known for calm.
