Mele Kalikimaka is the Hawaiian phonetic adaptation of Merry Christmas, born from a language that has no R or S and rebuilt those English sounds with the consonants it does have. Bing Crosby's 1949 song carried the phrase off the islands and into every December playlist on the mainland, and it has stayed there ever since. In Hawaiʻi itself, Christmas looks like beach picnics and barefoot family photos, surfboards leaned against the tree, and lei made of ti leaves wrapped around the porch railing.
