The Story Behind the Hawaiian Monk Seal

The Hawaiian monk seal is the only pinniped endemic to the islands, found nowhere else on earth. Their lineage is ancient — these are among the oldest seal species still alive — and yet they are one of the most endangered marine mammals in the United States, with roughly 1,500 individuals remaining. Hauling out on beaches to rest is essential to survival, and the simple kuleana of giving them at least fifty feet of space, no matter how tempting a closer photo might be, is part of what may keep the species in the world.
