The Story Behind Na Pali

The cliffs rise 4,000 feet from the ocean, carved by millions of years of rainfall, wind, and wave. The Kalalau Trail traces the cliff edge for 11 miles from Ke'e Beach to Kalalau Beach, passing the Hanakāpī'ai Falls valley and several Hawaiian taro-farming valleys that were inhabited for centuries before access from the rest of the island became too difficult. The coast is protected as a state wilderness park. Spinner dolphins (naia) and humpbacks (kohola, in winter) move along the open water below.
