The Story Behind the Nene

The nēnē is the endemic Hawaiian goose, evolved from a Canada-goose ancestor that arrived in the islands hundreds of thousands of years ago. By 1950 fewer than thirty wild nēnē remained, and the species was on the edge of disappearing entirely. Decades of breeding programs, predator control, and habitat protection have brought the population back to more than three thousand birds across Hawai'i Island, Maui, Kaua'i, and Moloka'i. They are often seen walking across upland pastures and the slopes of Haleakalā, padded feet adapted to volcanic rock instead of the webbed feet of other geese.
