The Story Behind Nene Hawaii State Bird

The nēnē is Hawaiʻi's state bird and one of the world's most remarkable conservation success stories. A close relative of the Canada goose, the nēnē evolved in isolation on the Hawaiian islands, adapting to volcanic slopes with feet that became partially de-webbed for navigating rugged lava fields. By the mid-twentieth century, hunting and introduced predators had reduced the population to just a few dozen birds.

Through dedicated conservation efforts — including captive breeding programs and habitat protection on the Big Island and Kauaʻi — the nēnē population has rebounded into the thousands. Today they can be spotted near Kīlauea, Haleakalā, and other protected areas, walking unhurriedly across lava fields as if they own the place. This tee honors their resilience and the aloha ʻāina — love of the land — that brought them back.
