The outrigger design — main hull stabilized by a slender ama lashed parallel — evolved over centuries to handle Pacific swell with grace, speed, and stability. Kanaka Maoli used wa'a for fishing, transport, and ceremony, and double-hulled wa'a kaulua for the longer ocean voyages that settled the Polynesian triangle. Today, paddling clubs across the islands keep the practice alive: morning crews on every coast, regatta seasons in protected water, and channel races like the Moloka'i Hoe that test crews across some of the toughest open water in the Pacific.
