Pipeline sits on Oahu's North Shore, breaking over a shallow lava reef just yards from a beach that becomes, every winter, the surfing capital of the world. The wave is hollow, fast, and unforgiving; first surfed seriously by Phil Edwards in 1961, it has since defined careers and ended them in the same session. The Pipe Masters and the broader Triple Crown of Surfing turn this stretch of sand into a global stage every winter. The reef beneath the wave has earned every cliché written about it.
