The Story Behind Pipeline North Shore

Banzai Pipeline on O'ahu's North Shore has been the benchmark of big-wave surfing since the early 1960s, when pioneering surfers first began riding its thunderous, hollow barrels. The wave breaks over a shallow reef just offshore from Ehukai Beach, producing a perfectly shaped tube that is as dangerous as it is beautiful — the lava bottom lurks just a few feet below the surface at low tide.

The Pipeline Masters competition, held here each December, is the final event of the Championship Tour, the most prestigious finish in professional surfing. But Pipeline belongs to more than pros — it draws surfers and spectators from every country, all drawn by the same magnetic pull of a wave that seems designed by nature to push human courage to its edge.
