Plumeria Hawaii T-Shirt
Plumeria is the flower most people smell before they see — a soft, almost vanilla sweetness carried on the trade wind.
The Story Behind the Plumeria
Plumeria was introduced to Hawai'i in 1860 from Mexico and Central America by German botanist William Hillebrand, and it took to the islands so well that today it lines church yards, cemeteries, school campuses, and family lanai across the entire chain. The flowers come in white, yellow, pink, and red, each with the same five-petal pinwheel shape — easy to pick up off a sidewalk and tuck behind an ear. Worn behind the right ear, the bloom traditionally signals "taken"; behind the left, "available."
For Flower Lovers & Island People
For locals, it's the tree in tūtū's yard, the smell that means home. For visitors, it's the scent that lingered on a hotel pillow and stayed with you all the way home.
