The pū is more than a horn. In Polynesian voyaging culture, conch shells were used to communicate between canoes on long ocean crossings, and on land they marked the opening of ceremony, the arrival of an aliʻi, or the start of Makahiki. The breath that carries the sound is intentional — pure exhale becomes invocation, and the listener is asked to quiet down, to honor the moment, to feel lōkahi with what is happening.
