The Story Behind the Road to Hana

Hawai'i Route 360 winds along Maui's lush windward coast from Pā'ia to Hāna town, passing waterfalls (Twin Falls, Wailua Falls), black sand beaches (Wai'ānapanapa), bamboo forests, and lava tubes. Hāna itself remained one of the most isolated Hawaiian communities for centuries, holding onto traditional language, fishing, and farming practices long after roads transformed the rest of the island. The drive is one of the great American road trips, and a Jeep with the top off is the classic way to do it.
