Ua Mau Ke Ea Hawaiian State Motto Hawaii T-Shirt
Ua mau ke ea o ka 'āina i ka pono — the life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness.
The Meaning of Ua Mau Ke Ea
The phrase is not poetry. It is a covenant. After the brief Paulet Affair in which a British naval officer seized the kingdom, the islands were restored to Hawaiian sovereignty, and Kamehameha III marked the moment with these words at Thomas Square in Honolulu in 1843. Ua Mau Ke Ea binds together 'āina (land), ea (life and sovereignty), and pono (righteousness, balance) into a single sentence that is still recited at graduations, protests, and pā'ina across the islands today.
For Lovers of Hawaiian Heritage
For locals, this design is a heritage banner — kama'āina identity worn out loud. For visitors, it is a souvenir that actually means something, a phrase to carry home with the full weight of Hawaiian history behind it.
