The Story Behind Kilauea

Kīlauea sits inside Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island's southeast slope. The summit caldera holds Halema'uma'u crater, sacred in Hawaiian tradition as the home of Pele, goddess of fire and volcanoes. When eruptions fill the crater with a lava lake — as they have in 2020, 2021, and 2023 — the night sky above the park glows orange and rangers open extended evening hours. The smell of sulfur drifts on the trade wind. Offerings of 'ōhi'a lehua are left at the rim out of respect.
