The Story Behind the Waa Kaulua

Wa'a kaulua means double-hulled voyaging canoe — the kind of vessel that carried Polynesians across thousands of miles of open Pacific to settle Hawai'i. This tee honors that astonishing feat of seamanship.

Hawaiian voyagers crossed open ocean without compass, sextant, or chart, navigating by stars, swells, bird flight, and the memorized wisdom of generations. The wa'a kaulua was their craft — two hulls lashed together with a central platform, sails of woven lauhala, a steering paddle held by a master navigator. The 1976 voyage of the Hōkūle'a famously revived this knowledge, and today wayfinders continue to sail her on long voyages around the world. Every wa'a kaulua is a living library.
