Polynesian voyagers crossed thousands of miles of open Pacific in wa'a kaulua, reading stars, swells, cloud shapes, and the flight patterns of seabirds. The arrival in Hawai'i is one of the most extraordinary navigational achievements in human history. In 1976 the Hōkūle'a, a modern wa'a kaulua, reawakened this knowledge with her first voyage to Tahiti without instruments — proving the ancestral methods were as accurate as anyone had ever claimed. The tradition lives on today in active wayfinding programs across the islands.
