The Story Behind Waikoloa

Waikoloa Beach Resort sits on the Big Island's South Kohala coast, where the mountains block the windward rain and leave the land sunny year-round. At the heart of the resort, 'Anaeho'omalu Bay ("A-Bay") is built around ancient Hawaiian fishponds where ali'i once raised mullet and 'awa. The petroglyph fields at Pu'ako, just to the south, hold hundreds of carvings pecked into pāhoehoe lava — one of the largest collections in Polynesia. The land here is old, the sun is steady, the breeze comes off the channel.
