The Story Behind Wailea Sunsets

Wailea — "water of Lea," goddess of canoe-builders — sits on Maui's leeward south shore beneath the slopes of Haleakalā, sheltered from the wet trade winds and blessed with some of the most reliable sunsets in the islands. Five crescent beaches step down the coast (Polo, Wailea, Ulua, Mokapu, Keawakapu), each opening westward toward Kaho'olawe and Molokini. In winter, the same warm channel cradles kohola (humpback whales) — sometimes you'll see a breach silhouetted against the orange.
