The Story Behind Waimea Bay

Waimea sits on Oahu's North Shore, and it is the birthplace of modern big-wave surfing. Greg Noll, Eddie Aikau, and a small handful of pioneers first rode it seriously in the late 1950s and early 1960s, and it has been a proving ground ever since. The Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational — "the Eddie" — only runs when the bay produces faces of forty feet or more, and the phrase "the Eddie would go" has become a global expression of courage that honors the Hawaiian waterman it's named for. Waimea is more than a wave; it's a memorial in motion.
