The Story Behind Waimea Canyon

Waimea Canyon stretches roughly 10 miles long and 3,000 feet deep across Kaua'i's west side. Mark Twain is widely credited with naming it the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific," though the canyon was sacred to Hawaiians long before that. The red walls were carved by the Waimea River and amplified by an ancient collapse of part of the island's shield volcano. The mineral-rich earth contains iron oxide that gives the canyon its rust color. From the Pu'u Hinahina lookout, the morning light hits first.
