Oʻahu Travel Guide: Beaches, Hikes & Local Eats

Aerial view of Waikiki Beach and Honolulu skyline on Oʻahu, Hawaiʻi

Oʻahu, the Gathering Place, packs Hawaiʻi's biggest city, its most famous surf break, and some of its best local food onto one island. Whether this is your first Oʻahu travel guide or you're planning a return trip, here's how to spend your time well.

Waikīkī Beach

Waikīkī is where modern surfing was popularized, largely thanks to Duke Kahanamoku. The beach is calm and beginner-friendly, backed by hotels, restaurants, and the green expanse of Kapiʻolani Park. Watching the sun set behind Diamond Head from the sand is a classic first-night activity.

Hikes Worth the Sweat

Diamond Head Crater is the postcard hike — short, steep, and rewarded with sweeping views of Honolulu and the coastline. For fewer crowds, the Mānoa Falls trail winds through rainforest to a waterfall, and the Lanikai Pillbox hike on the windward side has some of the best sunrise views on the island.

The North Shore

In winter, North Shore breaks like Pipeline and Sunset Beach draw the world's best surfers and plenty of spectators. Come summer, the water turns glassy and calm, perfect for swimming. Either season, save time for a shrimp truck stop in Kahuku and a walk through the historic town of Haleʻiwa.

Local Eats

Oʻahu is a food island as much as a beach island. Try a plate lunch with two scoops of rice, malasadas from a Chinatown bakery, and poke from a local grocery counter. Chinatown in downtown Honolulu is worth a slow afternoon for its mix of markets, art galleries, and small plates.

Wearing the island is part of the trip too — our Oʻahu collection is designed by a Native Hawaiian–owned studio in Kailua-Kona, made for people who actually know these breaks and beaches.
