The Story Behind the Kauai Chickens

Kaua'i's feral chicken population owes itself partly to Polynesian voyagers who brought jungle fowl across the Pacific, and partly to Hurricane 'Iniki in 1992, which released farm-kept birds from broken coops. Without mongoose on the island (the predator that arrived elsewhere with sugar plantations), the moa thrived and now belong to the landscape. From Ke'e Beach to Po'ipū to the Kalalau trailhead, hens cross trails with chicks, and roosters greet sunrise everywhere from Lihu'e to Hanalei.
