A coconut, a straw, a long beach afternoon — and suddenly the rest of the world becomes optional. The coconut drink is the simplest possible Hawaiian beverage, and somehow the most photogenic.

Niu (the coconut palm) is one of the original canoe plants — brought to Hawai'i by Polynesian voyagers more than a thousand years ago, along with kalo, 'ulu, mai'a, and a handful of other essentials. Coconuts were so important that ancient Hawaiians used every part: the meat for food, the water for drink, the husk for cordage, the shell for bowls, the leaves for weaving, the trunk for wood. The drink-from-the-coconut tradition you see on every island today is a tourist-era simplification, but the underlying reverence is real — niu has been one of the most useful and sacred plants in the Hawaiian world for centuries.

For locals, this tee is a small wink at the postcard version of life here. For visitors, it's the souvenir of that one perfect afternoon at the beach, straw in a coconut, warm sand, nowhere to be.

Soft unisex tee. Multiple sizes and colorways available.
