Hula is not danced alone. It travels with its instruments — the ipu, the pahu, the 'ulī'ulī, the pū'ili, the 'ili'ili — each one a voice that helps tell the story.

The ipu heke (double gourd) keeps the time. The pahu (sharkskin-headed drum) is sacred to hula kahiko and was once played only at heiau. The 'ulī'ulī are feathered gourd rattles shaken with the hands. The pū'ili are split bamboo sticks struck against the body or against another dancer's. The 'ili'ili are smooth stones clicked between the fingers like castanets. Together they form an entire percussive ecosystem that lets the chant carry, the hips move, the mele come alive.

For locals, this design honors the tools that have kept hula alive through silencing, revival, and renaissance. For visitors, it is a souvenir of the sound of Hawai'i as it has always been — gourd, drum, stone, and breath.

Soft unisex tee. Multiple sizes and colorways available.
