Mai Tai Time is a small ceremony performed all over Hawai'i at roughly 5:00 p.m. — the rocks glass, the rum, the lime, the bright orange sky. Out of this world, the best, every single time.

The Mai Tai was invented in 1944 by Victor "Trader Vic" Bergeron, whose tiki bar in Oakland was the laboratory for what would become an entire mid-century aesthetic. The original was simple: aged Jamaican rum, fresh lime, orange curaçao, orgeat (almond syrup), and rock candy syrup, shaken hard with crushed ice. Hawai'i adopted the drink during the post-statehood tiki boom of the late 1950s, and resort bartenders along Kā'anapali and Waikīkī gave it its now-classic float of dark rum and a sprig of mint.

For locals, this design wears the easy pleasure of pau-hana on the lanai — the day folded up neatly, the breeze doing its work. For visitors, it's the tee that remembers that one mai tai, that one sunset, that one moment the trip clicked into place.
