The Story Behind Pe'ahi

Pe'ahi sits on Maui's exposed north shore, where deep Pacific swell wraps over a precise reef shelf and stands up into 40- to 60-foot walls. The Hawaiian name means "to beckon," and the wave earns it every winter when serious storms send energy down from the Aleutians. Pe'ahi was effectively unridden until tow-in pioneers in the early 1990s figured out how to access it, and it has since become the most respected paddle-in big-wave venue in the world. The cliffs above are part of the experience — a natural amphitheater for one of nature's loudest performances.
