The town itself was once a royal residence of King Kamehameha, who returned here to live out his final years; today Ali'i Drive curves along the same lava-rock shoreline he knew. The coffee belt above it has been producing since 1828, and the farms — mostly small, mostly family-owned — are the descendants of the Japanese plantation tradition that took root in the 1890s.
