Before ink met skin, pattern lived on kapa — the beaten bark cloth of old Hawai'i. This panel carries that older language forward.

Kapa was made from wauke (paper mulberry), pounded with carved beaters and stamped with bamboo 'ohe kāpala dipped in natural dyes. The motifs — diamonds, fern fronds, sun rays, repeating triangles — were not decoration alone but a record of family, rank, and place. Many of the same shapes later traveled into kakau, so a kapa panel and a tattoo panel often speak the same dialect. This design honors that lineage: a printed kapa block reborn as wearable art, the rhythm of the kapa beater still humming in the geometry.

For locals, it's a quiet nod to the wahine who kept this art alive long before museums noticed. For visitors, it's a way to bring home a piece of Hawaiian pattern history that goes deeper than a postcard.

Soft unisex tee. Multiple sizes and colorways available.
