The Meaning of the Kumulipo

The Kumulipo unfolds in 16 epochs, and this panel honors the shape of that great chant — the slow, ordered emergence of life from the deep darkness of pō.

The chant begins with the smallest creatures of the reef and ends, many hours of recitation later, with the lineage of the ali'i. In between, every Hawaiian life form is named and placed in relationship to those that came before. The Kumulipo is not allegory. It is a Hawaiian way of saying: we belong here by descent, by genealogy, by an unbroken thread that ties us to the coral as surely as to our grandparents. To learn the chant is a serious kuleana.
