The Kumulipo is more than 2,000 lines long and was composed for the birth of a high chief in the early 1700s. It traces the genealogy of the Hawaiian people back through every form of life — coral, sea urchin, fish, kalo, manu, mammal — until it arrives at humanity and ali'i. To read it is to understand that, in Hawaiian thought, kanaka are not separate from the natural world but the youngest descendants of it. The chant is whakapapa rendered as cosmology.
