The domain of Lono is the cultivated field, the rain cloud, and the season of peace.

Lono is the akua of agriculture, of fertility, of the kalo planted in deep mud and the sweet potato tucked into the dry slopes. Every year, his Makahiki season begins with the rising of Makali'i and lasts roughly four months — a long pause in which warfare was forbidden, hookupu was gathered for the ali'i, and the people gave thanks for what the land had given. The pig, the gourd, and the dark cloud full of rain are all forms in which Lono has been honored. His domain is gentle, but it is the gentleness that feeds everyone.
