Wailea’s pristine coastline on Maui’s south shore is the product of both geological forces and generations of Hawaiian stewardship. The name Wailea means “waters of Lea,” referring to Lea, the Hawaiian goddess of canoe makers. In ancient times, the forests above Wailea provided the koa wood used for constructing the waʻa (canoes) that allowed Hawaiians to navigate the Pacific Ocean. This connection between the land, the sea, and the people who depend on both is at the heart of the Hawaiian cultural concept of malama ʻāina — caring for the land. Wailea’s beauty is, in part, the inheritance of that care.
