Slack key — kī hō'alu — is the Hawaiian guitar tradition of loosening the strings until the instrument sings in its own quiet, open-tuned voice.

The style began in the 1800s, when Mexican vaqueros (paniolo) arrived in the islands to teach Hawaiians how to work cattle on the upcountry pastures. The vaqueros brought guitars, and when they left, the instruments stayed. Hawaiian players tuned the strings down — slackened them — until the guitar resonated in chords that suited the songs they wanted to sing. Generations of masters like Gabby Pahinui, Sonny Chillingworth, and Raymond Kāne kept the tradition alive, often passing tunings down within families like inherited keys.

For locals, this design honors a sound that is woven into every Sunday lā'au and family pā'ina. For visitors, it is a souvenir of the warmest part of a Hawaiian evening — the guitar in someone's lap, the chord opening up, the islands answering back.

Soft unisex tee. Multiple sizes and colorways available.
