Tropical Tiki Nights — when the torches stay lit until 2 a.m. and the bartender already knows your order. The tiki lounge is Hawai'i's evening uniform, somewhere between a movie set and a memory.

Tiki culture began on the U.S. mainland in the 1930s — Don the Beachcomber, Trader Vic — but it bloomed into its full plumage in post-statehood Hawai'i. The 1960s and 70s Waikīkī scene gave us live Hawaiian-music lounges, fire-knife dancers, and the kind of menus where every drink came with a tiny umbrella and a tropical garnish. The aesthetic borrowed (and sometimes invented) bits of Polynesian iconography; the warm night air and the rum, however, were entirely real. La Mariana Sailing Club in Honolulu is the last surviving original-era tiki bar in Hawai'i.

For locals, this tee is the fondness for the lit-up lanai at the end of a long week. For visitors, it's the souvenir of one of those nights — torches, breeze, and somebody picking up a ukulele unprompted.
