The Story Behind Ukulele & Lei

The ukulele arrived in Hawai'i in 1879 with Portuguese plantation workers from Madeira, who brought a small four-stringed instrument called the machete. Hawaiian musicians took to it instantly — King David Kalākaua himself was a passionate player and helped make the ukulele central to the Hawaiian Renaissance of the late 19th century. The lei, far older, predates Western contact by centuries — flowers, ti leaf, kukui nuts, shells, each kind carrying its own significance. Together, ukulele and lei mark the moments that matter: arrivals, lū'au, weddings, family meals that stretch into the dusk.
