The Story Behind Wayfinding

Polynesian navigators memorized the rising and setting points of dozens of stars along the horizon, used the zenith star of an island to confirm latitude, and read swells, clouds, and birds for what they revealed about distant land. Hōkūle'a, the Polynesian voyaging canoe launched in 1975 and sailed by the Polynesian Voyaging Society with master navigator Mau Piailug, proved that this knowledge had never been lost — only quieted. Today, a new generation of Hawaiian wayfinders is sailing again, teaching the sky, and returning the canoes to the deep.
