From volcanic islands still being born to a language with only 13 letters, these fun facts about Hawaiʻi cover the quirks, records, and everyday surprises that make the islands unlike anywhere else on Earth. Whether you're planning your first trip or just love trivia, these are the facts that tend to stick.
Hawaiʻi Is the Only U.S. State Made Entirely of Islands
Hawaiʻi is the only U.S. state with no land border and the only one composed entirely of islands — 137 of them in total, though only seven are inhabited. It's also the southernmost state in the country, and the only one located outside North America.
The Islands Are Still Growing
Kīlauea, one of the world's most active volcanoes, continues to add new land to the Big Island with every eruption. Thanks to this ongoing volcanic activity, Hawaiʻi Island is technically still growing — making it one of the only places on the planet where you can watch new land form in real time.
Hawaiian Has One of the Smallest Alphabets in the World
The Hawaiian alphabet, ka pīʻāpā Hawaiʻi, has just 13 letters: five vowels and eight consonants, plus the ʻokina (a glottal stop) and the kahakō (a macron marking long vowels). Despite its small alphabet, Hawaiian is rich with meaning — many words carry layered or poetic meanings depending on context.
It's Home to the World's Tallest Sea Mountain
Measured from its base on the ocean floor to its summit, Mauna Kea is taller than Mount Everest — over 33,000 feet from base to peak, with about 13,800 feet visible above sea level. Its high, dry summit also makes it one of the best places on Earth for astronomy.

These little-known details are part of what makes a trip to the Hawaiian Islands so memorable — there's always another layer of history, geology, or language to discover once you're there.
