Which Hawaiian Island Should You Visit?

Six islands are open to visitors, but most people only have time for one trip — so which Hawaiian island should you visit first? The honest answer depends on what kind of vacation you actually want, since Oʻahu, Maui, Kauaʻi, and the Big Island each deliver a different version of Hawaiʻi.

Oʻahu: For First-Timers Who Want It All

Oʻahu is home to Honolulu, Waikīkī, and the majority of Hawaiʻi's population, which means the widest range of restaurants, museums, and nightlife alongside iconic beaches like Waikīkī and Lanikai. It's also the easiest island to fly into and get around, with the most direct flights from the mainland. If you want a mix of city energy and beach time without a lot of driving, start here.

Maui: For Beaches, Road Trips, and Romance

Maui is built for slower, scenic days — the Road to Hāna, sunrise at Haleakalā, and some of the state's most photogenic beaches. It's a favorite for honeymoons and anniversaries, and it rewards travelers who like to rent a car and explore rather than stay put at a resort.

Kauaʻi: For Nature and Quiet

Kauaʻi is the least developed of the major islands, with no buildings taller than a coconut tree by law. The Nāpali Coast, Waimea Canyon, and endless hiking trails make it the pick for travelers who want dramatic scenery and fewer crowds over nightlife and shopping.

The Big Island: For Volcanoes and Variety

The Big Island is genuinely big — big enough to have snow-capped Mauna Kea, an active volcano at Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, black sand beaches, and coffee farms all within a few hours' drive of each other. It's the best choice if you want geological drama and don't mind spending more time in the car.

So, Which One Is Right for You?

If it's your first trip and you want convenience, pick Oʻahu. If you want romance and beach days, pick Maui. If you want quiet and nature, pick Kauaʻi. If you want adventure and variety, pick the Big Island. Many visitors end up island-hopping over multiple trips once they get a taste of what each one offers — explore our Hawaiian Islands collection to bring a piece of whichever island calls to you back home.
