It sounds like a simple question, but the answer surprises almost everyone: how many Hawaiian islands are there? Most people picture the eight big ones you can visit, and that's the number you'll hear most often. But the Hawaiian archipelago actually stretches across roughly 1,500 miles of the Pacific and includes 137 islands, atolls, reefs, and islets in all. The short answer depends on what you count — so let's break it down clearly.
The 8 main Hawaiian islands
When people say "the Hawaiian Islands," they almost always mean the eight main islands at the southeastern end of the chain. From largest to smallest, they are:
- Hawaiʻi Island (the "Big Island") — the youngest and by far the largest, home to Mauna Kea and the active volcanoes of Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park.
- Maui — the "Valley Isle," known for Haleakalā, the Road to Hāna, and historic Lahaina.
- Oʻahu — the "Gathering Place," the most populous island, home to Honolulu, Waikīkī, and the North Shore.
- Kauaʻi — the "Garden Isle," the oldest main island, with the Nā Pali Coast and Waimea Canyon.
- Molokaʻi — the quiet, deeply Hawaiian island with the world's tallest sea cliffs.
- Lānaʻi — the small, rugged "Pineapple Isle," now known for its remote luxury and Garden of the Gods.
- Niʻihau — the privately owned "Forbidden Isle," closed to most visitors and home to a small Nīhau community that still speaks Hawaiian daily.
- Kahoʻolawe — the smallest of the eight, uninhabited and now a protected cultural reserve.

Why the total is 137
Beyond the eight main islands, the archipelago keeps going for another thousand-plus miles to the northwest. These are the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands — a long trail of small islands, atolls, sandbars, and reefs like Nihoa, Necker (Mokumānamana), French Frigate Shoals, Laysan, and Kure Atoll. Add them to the main islands and the official count reaches 137.
Almost all of these smaller islands are uninhabited and fiercely protected as part of Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument, one of the largest conservation areas on Earth. They're vital nesting grounds for seabirds, Hawaiian monk seals, and green sea turtles, and they're closed to the public. So while the archipelago technically has 137 islands, the ones you can actually set foot on number just a handful.
How the islands were born
The whole chain was built by a single volcanic "hot spot" in the Earth's mantle. As the Pacific Plate drifts slowly northwest, it carries each island away from the hot spot while a new one forms behind it. That's why the northwestern islands are the oldest and most eroded — worn down to reefs and sandbars — while Hawaiʻi Island in the southeast is still young and still growing with every eruption. A new island, Lōʻihi (Kamaʻehuakanaloa), is already forming underwater off the Big Island's coast.
